Student Organizations

Student Organizations

2007-present

Competency: Groups like this show initiative as well as social outings that provide networking leadership and personal growth.

Summary: There are three main groups that I have taken large amounts of activity and time in. The first group, that I am a member of, is a volunteer group know as STLF. There goal is to provide workforce for area good will causes such as, The Pay it Forward Tour, The Big Event, and The relay for life. These are just a few of the causes that they support. The next two groups I have taken active leadership roles in. NAIT, I am the president of and then the honor society of EPT I am the secretary.

Self-Reflection: It is groups like this were leadership is developed and peers see you as a leader and come to you for various reasons. It is because of these positions that I am able to step up and be confident in many ways.

Operations Management

Management

Fall 2008

Competency: This artifact demonstrates an understanding of the various theories involved within operations management.

Summary: This artifact recognizes the basic concepts of the bullwhip effect that takes place within a supply and demand situation. The artifact also shows company management, processing and systems and external relations within operations management. This game was designed to illustrate various influences of external factors as well as internal factors.

Self-Reflection: In these situations you really start to notice various effects that can happen within a company when they are ordering pieces and trying to stay within demand. One of the factors that was addressed after the situation was over, was communication, that was the biggest influence involved.

Facilities design

Facilities design

Spring 2008

Competency: This photo is artifact at a facility that was looked at and redesigned by a group project done in a Facilities design class. This demonstrated the various ideas such as lean thinking and production flow.

Summary: This photo is taken from a manufacturing company that produces upscale furniture for private clients as well as hotel chains. The company has issues with production flow as well as production rates. Our ideas and conclusions come to the assumption that poor layout was a large facture in there various issues.

Self-Reflection: This was one of the first project I help lead after I came back from my internship with Bobcat and it was from that experience that I was able to help push for various ideas to be implemented and put into place. One of the teammates that was in the group now works there and is implementing many of the ideas we discussed throughout our studies there.

Electronics

Electronics

Spring 2007

Software/Materials: Multisim, Various electrical components

Competency: This artifact comes an electronics class taken. The artifact demonstrates the ability to build a working model within a program then testing the program. Not pictured however is the work involved after the initial testing of the program. Once testing took place we built the system and put its application to real life.

Summary: This Artifact comes from a program that allows the building of a electrical system with out having to go out and physically putting the system together wasting time and money.

Self-Reflection: This project really showed the various aspects of electrical components. When working with systems like this critical thinking takes place and there is a need to really look hard and understand various theories that cannot be seen in a electrical system.

Machining and Manufacturing

Machining and Manufacturing

Spring 2006

Materials: Lath and mill

Competency: These pictures shows the overall competency of milling and lathing as well as working with various other types of machinery dealing with metal working. Other types of tools including forge, arc welder, Shopbot, grinder, and basic hand tools were also learned to be used but aren’t shown.

Summary: These two pictures are taken from a final case study that its goal was to demonstrate my over all abilities learned through out my studies. However most of the skills learn were from a machining and manufacturing class. In that class we learn how to manufacture various pieces from different types of materials and processes.

Self-Reflection: With a background of living on a ranch and a farm the ideas that were brought forth from the course were this artifact came from, only enhanced various skills that I already knew. It is from this experience that I feel most comfortable in this area.

Manufacturing engineering co-op

Manufacturing engineering co-op

Summer-Fall 2007

Competency: This artifact shows a few of the many projects and events that took place while I learned hands on experience in the field of manufacturing. Ideas such as lean, facilities design, ergonomics, OSEH, and operational management.

Summary: These are just a few of the many things that I experienced as a ME at Bobcat. To summaries the time that I spent there into a brief page would be unfruitful. However the time spent there was a great learning experience and it advanced me way beyond what any other program or teaching could take me. As you can see from the pictures the first photo is a line side rack designed to hold various hardware for operators. This is also an idea of lean manufacturing, minimizing line side hardware. The second photo is a coolant fill station; the idea of this is to fill the machines with coolant while removing any air from the system. This provides the machine with easy start up with out having to add additional coolant.

Self-Reflection: The hands on experience of Bobcat propelled me through the rest of my schooling. It was these experiences that help me link theories taught to me at the University of North Dakota to hands on situations as well as a spark to push through tough academic challenges.

Applied Synthetics

Applied Synthetics

Spring 2006

Materials: Chop fiberglass, Wood, Polyester resign

Competency: This project demonstrates an overall competency of applied synthetics materials and process that are needed in order to create shapes and objects that would not normally be created by conventional materials.

Summary: This project is a Sub-woofer enclosure for a spare tire that fits into the trunk of a car. The idea of this project was to show the understanding of the creation of hardened fiberglass. The project also shows ideas such as weight reduction and creativity.

Self-Reflection: It was this project that I was really about to take my creative side and apply it using hands on method to real world situation. I took my own car and spare and created a sub woofer that saved space as well as gain the space I would have normally lost with a traditional sub woofer box.

Graphic design

Graphic design

Magazines tear out

Fall 2006

Software: Adobe Indesign, Adobe Photoshop

Competency: This magazine tear out shows how with different software used together can create useful and practical items. The Tear out also shows how various considerations have to be taken into account such as balance, font, and clarity of photos all need to be taken into account.

Summary: This is a project from Graphic design side of Industrial technology. The object was to create a magazine tear out that follows criteria of other tear outs as well as demonstrate an artistic and creative side.

Self-Reflection: One aspect of graphic design that really brings out your own touch is its freedom of creativity. Projects and assignment like this I was able to come up with my own design and elaborate on that design.

CADD

Final Project

Spring 2007

Software: Auto Desk Vizio

Competency: This Project demonstrates and overall competency of the use of the Vizio software. Elements such as creation of revolved object, Unioning, and applying materials were all incorporated in to this final project. The project also shows various aspect of 3D modeling

Summary: This project shows the various tools that are needed to create just about any sort of object that one can conceive. Each piece is unique in there own way and are designed that way. They are full 3D objects that when rotated you would be able to view each piece as you would a real object in life.

Self-Reflection: IT was this project that I spent over three to four weeks solid working on. The creation of these rims led to the creation of over 50 different and full 3D rims like the ones in the photo.

CADD

Applying materials and lighting

Spring 2007

Software: Auto Desk Vizio

Competency: This Rendering shows lighting and materials that demonstrate the learned Principles of various features of CADD software.

Summary: There are a few elements that stand out; the first element seen in the rendering is the use of materials. These materials give off the appearance of real textures and color. Another element that is used is the use of the lighting feature of CADD. When this feature is applied to areas of the creation you get the illusion of real lighting.

Self-Reflection: When going through the processes of creating this rendering I went through various stages of creativity as well as learning the methods of the software. Such as how to apply materials to certain object. Creating a lighting system that when rendered shows legitimate lighting characteristics.
